1.65 MW Combined Heat and Power (CHP) biomass facility at Villa Nursery in Essex results in vastly reduced energy bills for the family business that supplies salad to some of the UK’s largest supermarkets including Waitrose and Aldi.
AMP Plc, fully financed the project that, thanks to lower energy bills, will help Villa Nursery increase productivity and reduce costs, resulting in greater levels of investment and increased numbers of new jobs for local people.
Energy was a major cost for the nursery, which has over 15 acres of peppers under glass. An Energy Supply Company (ESCO) arrangement with equipment owner, AMP Plc, allows the nursery to buy back the low cost energy generated by the newly installed biomass CHP plant with no need for initial investment or ongoing maintenance costs.
Project partner, Wood Energy, installed a 1.65 Mw wood chip fueled biomass boiler plus Heliex HP 145 GenSet. The residual heat is used to warm the greenhouses and the electricity is used on site for lighting etc.
The low cost heat is eligible for incentives through the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme and the electricity is eligible for Renewable Obligations Certificates (ROC’s). 8 million kW and 220 days of heat will be generated annually by the biomass CHP plant.
Payback on the Heliex system is under 1 year
